Wicked musical at Apollo Victoria TheatreWicked is based on a novel by Gregory Maguire, and has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman.

Wicked is the untold story of the witches, from the story of The Wizard of Oz. The original version of the story was The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which is a children’s book written by L. Frank Baum and was first published in 1900.

Wicked focuses on the relationship between Elphaba the future Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda The Good Witch of the North. Their struggles with their differing personalities, rivalry over a love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard’s dishonest government, and, finally, Elphaba’s fall from grace. The plot is set predominantly before Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas, and includes mention of well-known scenes and dialogue from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland.

When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch, we only heard one side of the story. Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, created a new popular heroine of fantasy literature. It explains how the misunderstood Elphaba became “wicked”, while her unlikely friend, Glinda, became “good”.
