Gemma Arterton to star in The Duchess of Malfi at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

Gemma ArtertonGemma Arterton is to star in The Globe’s The Duchess of Malfi where she will play the title role in the show, which will be the first production in the London venue’s new 340-seat indoor theatre, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

Arterton made her professional stage debut at The Globe as Rosaline in a production of Love’s Labour’s Lost in 2007. She has also performed in The Master Builder at the Almeida and in The Little Dog Laughed at the Garrick Theatre.

The Duchess of Malfi will run from 9th January to 16th February, 2014 and be directed by the Globe’s artistic director Dominic Dromgoole.

Arterton said: “To play the Duchess of Malfi in a magical new theatre seemed an irresistible opportunity for me. I am thrilled to be coming back to Shakespeare’s Globe where I made my stage debut and I really look forward to the adventure of performing in such an intimate and wonderful space.
