The Lion King Musical Watch a Video Clip of Lion King Musical The Lion King is a Tony and Olivier Award winning Broadway and West End musical based on the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name. It contains actors in animal costumes as well as giant, hollow puppets and is directed by Julie Taymor. When the young lion Prince Simba is born, his evil uncle Scar is pushed back to second in line to the throne. Scar plots to kill both Simba and his father, King Mufasa, and proclaim himself King. Simba survives, but is led to believe that his father died because of him and he decides to flee the kingdom. The stage musical was first shown on 8th July, 1997 in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Orpheum Theatre. It was an instant and tremendous success before moving permanently to the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway, in October of that year. The show's debut in London's Lyceum Theatre was in 1999 and it is still running. There was another production opening in Toronto, playing there until January 2004. The musical incorporates several changes and additions to the story line compared to the film. The mandrill Rafiki's gender is changed to a female role, as Taymor believed there was generally no leading female character in the film. Songs from the show include: Circle of Life - The Morning Report The Lioness Hunt - I Just Can't Wait to Be King Chow Down - They Live in You Be Prepared - Hakuna Matata E One by One - The Madness of King Shadowland - Endless Night Can You Feel the Love Tonight He Lives in You (Reprise) King of Pride Rock - Circle of Life (Reprise) Please note: strobe lighting is used several times during the performance.
