The Marquis stands on the ground of four demolished theatres on Broadway. The Gaiety, Astor, old Helen Hayes, Morosco and Bijou. The Marquis opened on July 9th, 1986, with a short-lived production of Shirley Bassey. The Marriot Marquis Hotel stands on the grounds of the theatres, and the Marquis Theatre rests inside the hotel.
Notable productions that the Marquis has housed in recent years are The Drowsy Chaperone, Andrew Lloyd Weber's short-lived musical The Woman in White starring Maria Friedman, the Tony Award-winning revival of Jerry Herman's La Cage Aux Folles, Thoroughly Modern Millie starring Drowsy's Sutton Foster (who won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
In the 1990s the theatre housed, among other shows, Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria and Bernadette Peters who won her second Tony Award for her performance in Annie Get Your Gun. Peters was replaced, later in the run, by Reba McEntire, who received much praise for her portrayal of the famed Annie Oakley.
