Circle In The Square Theatre
1633 Broadway, NY10019
The Circle in the Square is a Broadway theatre in Manhattan. It is below street level and has a seating capacity of approximately 625. Designed by architect Alan Sayles, it is one of two theatres in the Paramount Plaza office tower. Its much bigger partner is the Gershwin Theatre. The entrance lobbies are side by side but separated by a wall.
Circle in the Square, one of New York's oldest theatres, was
founded in 1951 by Paul Libin, Theodore Mann and Jose Quintero.
In 1972, it moved to its new Broadway home on 50th Street, which
was the first new Broadway theatre in fifty years.
During
many years, Circle in the Square has offered some of America's
finest actors the chance to take on demanding roles in an
atmosphere free of commercial pressure. The commitment to the
presentation of plays not normally produced on Broadway has
allowed audiences to see challenging material.
The original Circle in the Square was founded by Jose
Quintero and was located at 5 Sheridan Square in Greenwich
Village. The original Circle in the square did not have a theatre
license. The production staff and off duty actors served as
waiters if anyone insisted on ordering food or drinks. Many of
the theatre personnel, both acting and technical, lived on the
premises.
