Built in 1917 and named for playwright George Broadhurst, who was made co-manager of the theatre. The Broadhurst Theatre was originally co-owned by the Shubert brothers and George Howells Broadhurst. In 1966, the long-running production of Cabaret, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, played at the Broadhurst Theater for 1,166 performances.

In 1959, Fiorello! played for 796 performances at the Broadhurst, with a score by Bock and Harnick.

In 1993, Chita Rivera starred in the Tony-winning musical, The Kiss of the Spider Woman, which played for 906 performances.
