Ambassadors Theatre

219 West 49th Street, New York, NY10019

Seats Approximately 1100

Built by the Shuberts in 1921, who sold it in 1935. Through the Depression and the years following, combined theatre, radio, and television made use of the theater until 1956, when the Shuberts re-bought it for theatrical use. Krapp made a specialty of making theaters fit where they shouldn't. The entrance is part of his solution for this theater, siting the theater diagonally on the property to have room for a standard-sized auditorium. As in much of his work, Krapp saved money on the outside to pour plaster, gild and paint into the interior. The Ambassador's premier production was the Anselm Goetzel-William Carey musical The Rose Girl, on February 11th, 1921.

It was designated a New York City landmark in August 1985
