Great article, Gero definitelly deserves opinions like yours. Just one correction though (or addition if you'd like), Gerónimo WAS one fourth of Poker de Voces, he left it for pursuing another field of music: to study opera singing. And his recent debut as an opera singer was more than well accepted by public.

I do hope the Beeb coverage is better this year, not just two guys squeezed into a broom cupboard. And I'm sure Jodie Prenger is a lovely lady, but...oh dear. Having an interviewer who remembers to extend the microphone towards their interviewee occasionally would be a real bonus for the audience.

This is an amazing article. There are certainly some kids who may not enjoy going to the theater, but they should all get this kind of chance, because so many of them do love it. My sister, who ordinarily can't sit still, was simply entranced by Phantom when I took her to see it on Broadway for her birthday. It's such a magical thing.

I totally agree with this. There are certain ones that go time and time again that they are obsessive and keep poor Ramin standing talking when I am sure all he wants to do is get home as he doesn't live in London but he is such a gent. I bet he comes out sometimes and thinks oh no not them again but is too polite and they think they know him but its quite a bit like stalking really in my opinion.

I dont agree with the German reference as I have been to shows in Germany and have been at stage door at shows there, its just the same as here exept the fans there are not always as badly behaved as some here, once they have their photo/autograph they tend to stand to the side and let others in.
Been to many stage doors in this country to have regular attenders push and shove their way in front of you to get yet another photo of their favourite even though they get a photo almost every time they see the show. I do like the odd photo now and then and like to get everyone to sign my program. As a multiple show attender I feel its only fair to allow others who may only be at a show as a one-off to have their chance to meet the actors/dancers, I feel fortunate to be able to see them many times and am glad for the time that any of the cast take out of their own time to spend having a brief hello/chat at stage door when time permits.
What also annoys me a LOT is when fans infringe on casts time ie seek out their eating places etc and then go and talk to them then when all they really want is to have some food in peace instead of having to be bugged by annoying fans. Totally out of order in my opinion.

This is such a wonderful show that everyone should see at least once in there lives. I recently visited the 25th anniversary celerbration at the Royal Albert Hall, London. For anyone who has not seen the show it's visually stunning and the music is wonderful. I am so much looking forward to the new production that will be touring the UK. Just go out and bye your tickets now!

Congratulations to the winners, who were all up against stiff competition.
Special mention to Sheridan Smith, who proved what a versatile actress she is - - last year winning the BBW UK 'Best Leading Actress in a Musical' for Legally Blonde, and now 'Best Featured Actress in a Play' for her emotional performance in Flare Path.

Totally agree! We first saw Dean as the only Prince Charming we'd seen who not only looked good but could actually sing! Went on to see his 'Ash' in Never Forget more times than we care to recall and have been following his career ever since. As understudy in La Cage Aux Folles, Love Never Dies and Shrek we were privileged to see him both in the ensemble parts and as Etienne, Raoul and Shrek, all of which parts he made his own - and frequently out-shone the leads.
He so deserves this recognition and, having seen him play Shrek a few times already I know he's going to be brilliant - just listen to him!

So lovely to read a interview by the tremendously talented Stephen Ashfield. I am a huge fan of his voice and the man himself who has endeared himself to so many people at the "stage door". I wish him every success in life and in his career and have everything crossed that he wins the What's On Stage "take over" role on Friday at the awards ceremony. I have no doubt whatsoever that he will one day fulfill his ambition of playing the role of Raoul in Phantom.

I'm not sure that the ticket prices are that excessive.. a normal music concert will cost £30-£40 now and considering that staging needed for a modern musical £50 doesn't seem unreasonable.

Obviously it's still a lot a money for a large part of the population BUT.. those who want to go will find a way.

For me I've been wanting to see Phantom for ages.. if I went to London it would cost 3-4 times the amount I've paid to see it in Manchester once all costs are factored in.

My biggest complaint is the ticket touts buying tickets to re-sell at extortionate rate thus depriving real fans of the decent seats !

I found your article on twitter. I think you are looking at the issue from the wrong point of view - the point of view of someone who goes to the theatre regularly. Any of us who see as many as one show a week, sometimes more, are acquainted with a whole other level of talent than what is presented on tv. And we hold everyone to that standard.

Comparing musical theatre to pop music, in my opinion, is wrong. There are several people in the music industry who have brilliant voices but lack the versatility that the West End requires. At the end of the day, being a West End performer is not just about singing. And to be honest, acting is not required of a popstar, unless they are really, really good.

So, comparing the X Factor contestants to current pop stars and NOT to West End performers, your point actually still stands. I do think there are several respectable pop stars who actually DO put in as much effort in their shows as West End performers do in their roles. Obviously, there are also those who use click tracks at their concerts and disappoint when you see them live. But amongst all the crap that the music industry feeds us, I've still been able to find some performers that have appealed to me for either sheer talent or performance or both. You haven't watched this year, but I have to say, there is only one contestant who could sustain this as a career. The others are either one trick ponies, or just plain talentless.

Ultimately, I don't think the producers are to blame for putting on what is honestly a circus of a programme, but the viewers who cannot see through their tricks. If they started voting for the right people, the talented people, instead of being indoctrinated by what the judges say week on week, then it would be a competition about talent. But I do think it's utopic to wish that everyone went to see a West End show and then drew comparisons. It would be much simpler to read "Chart Throb" by Ben Elton - a real eye opener on the world of these "reality shows", and even that is utopic.

I don't know when exactly people stopped knowing what a good singer sounds like, and what a good performer looks like, but I do think it's an irreversible process now, and if they did see Ramin, Gina or JOJ, I can assure you they couldn't even tell the difference with a Kitty or a Sophie. We should be thankful we've still got the critical sense to see through the show because most people can't.

I really enjoy Tim Minchin as a comedy performer and am intrigued to see what he can come up with when writing lyrics in a "naughty child"-like way. Haven't got a ticket for Matilda yet, but I will book soon.

Thrilled at the prospect of Karimloo joining Les Mis - I'd hoped it would be a move we'd see sometime, but never thought it would come so soon! Only downside is, a colleague who has teased me over my already numerous visits to Les Mis will have even more ammunition now, because I will definitely want to see what Ramin brings to the role!

Saw Gina perform recently in the Belle's Stratagem; such an appealing and humorous actress with a beautiful, effortless singing voice. News of her casting in Wicked is the only thing that has inspired me to buy a ticket for that particular show. With Gina in place, it might just live up to the hype!

I do regret missing these "A Night with the Phantom" concerts. Just couldn't make the dates/venues, unfortunately. Hoping for a London date once Ramin's album is out, though.

You are so right! I've never seen an episode of The X Factor in full (only caught odd bits while channel hopping) but have seen enough to know that very few of those who perform in these sorts of shows have actual "talent". On the other hand, many's the time I've sat in a theatre and been thrilled, moved or enthused by singers/performers there.

I must admit to having a soft spot for the ALW talent-spotting shows, though. Generally the young hopefuls are treated with respect (though not always with kid gloves!) and it's rewarding to recognise so many past competitors' names now appearing in West End cast lists.

Went to see Stand Tall - 3 out of 3 - completely agree! 10 out of 10 for fabness too. A brilliantly inspiring musical which really is for everyone! I do not think anyone would leave this unsatified unless they are generally void.
Excellent writing - amazing lyrics belted out by excellent cast. The Landor makes it special - almost like unwrapping the first layer.....another layer as it prepares for the West End and I will be bouncing like a bunny with excitement as it grows.

I sometimes wonder if they do different versions of shows when I'm not there. Really looked forward to seeing this show, but so, so disappointed. Good performances that deserved better material.
The music could have been transplanted from any other run-of-the-mill show - and why amplify it to the point of bursting eardrums. At least I thought the 'ghost' effects might be thrilling, but there were no gasp moments, and anybody with a basic knowledge of stagecraft would know how they were done.

Hiya

Firstly I want to say that I agree with you, in my opinion fundraising for a limited company is wrong when there are charities out there that are struggling.

I also make the following comments

I feel that Dress Circle could improve its marketing a bit. Several people I have spoken to who regularly travel down to theatre in the London area had not heard of the shop. I went to West End Live this year which was not long after the article was in The Stage. I didnt see one mention of Dress Circle at this event. I understand that advertising, a stall etc may have been prohibitive however whilst queuing to get in, there were people walking around handing out flyers for various Theatre related things. Would it have cost too much to have someone hand out some Dress Circle flyers on with perhaps a map showing where the shop was? Perhaps mentioning that the cast recordings from the shows featured could be bought there? I would have thought that a presence at events like West End Live would be a priority for the business.

My other comment is pricing. I know that a small independent shop cannot match the big boys when it comes to prices, however for an example, assume I wanted to buy the new Phantom Albert Hall Blu-Ray and CD. To buy from Dress Circle would cost me just shy of £39. To buy from one of the big online retailers would cost £27. I simply can't justify an extra £12 to support small business - sorry but thats the truth of the matter.

In an ideal world, of course I would like to see Dress Circle survive as a shop, however if going online allows it to survive (and maybe reduce prices to a competitive level due to less overheads) then maybe that's the way to go...

Just my views

With such great performances and such great reviews, why is it that no one seems to consider filming or at least video-taping such brilliant acting for the rest of us to enjoy, instead of only a minor percentage of the privileged few who can manage to see it , and then only can relive the experience in their heads? Shame on Broadway (and London, too!)

I had a fantastic time at this last night also. Have read criticism elsewhere of the projections not feeling "like the real thing in the theatre", but in this venue they had to work with what they had, and I think they did a fine job. I for one loved seeing the Phantom writing his note as the actor on stage read it!

Before I went I had also read that Hadley Fraser had "disappointed vocally", so I was a bit on edge about that, but in the event, I thought that vocally he shone. This was, however, a Raoul cast more in the Love Never Dies mould, and from a character point of view, I couldn't see why Christine faced such a huge choice between her two men: both being, at times, cold and controlling. This hit home particularly as I found myself thinking at one point that lovely Sierra Boggess would surely have arms covered in bruises today after being dragged around the stage by her two leading men! I guess I'm just used to a more sensitive Raoul, but it was certainly interesting to be challenged by a different take on the role.

Sierra sounded amazing and, as someone who only discovered Ramin via LND, it was a pleasure to hear him sing POTO. Always a thrill to see/hear him and never more so than in that final scene in the Phantom's Lair. Also fun to see him bopping his head along in time to the music when the other Phantoms and Brightman sang the title song at the end!

Interesting article, and it's nice to see that National Theatres in Europe (such as the one you referred to ın the article, in the UK), are expanding their seasons to include a richer variety of productions for the public. This is, in many ways, the mission of a state-funded & -operated theater: to provide the public wıth culture that is intelligent, entertaining, and interesting.

At the start of your piece, you write that your friend questioned 'what the definition of theatre really was, arguing that it has become polarised into two main schisms – ‘real’ theatre and ‘shows’ – and that the audiences for each were very different from one another, being driven by separate needs.'

I would love to hear you expand on this topic, as I don't think it's adequately addressed here.

Many people have no problem reading a popular crime novel while on their way to the Opera, or enjoying some re-runs of 'Two and a Half Men' after seeıng a production of 'Betrayal' or other so-called 'serıous' work. Audıences can have a wıde range of tastes. And theaters can choose to broaden theır mıssıon to offer more dıverse programmıng--why not?

But none of thıs really addresses your orıgınal questıon--what does 'real' theater mean, versus a 'show'? How are the audıences dıfferent? Can you artıculate thıs ın more detaıl? And what are the 'separate needs' that these two forms of theater possess?

Very sad to hear that news. We saw it in the previews and we thought it was a fantatically funny evening out. Better choreography than wizard of oz and any musical that has the words bunions and corns in its lyrics is a work of genius! It cheered me up no end after a long day at work.

My wife and I Went to see Alfie Boe and Matt Lucas in this show and it was the most amazing night you could think of. Hairs on the back of your neck stood on end. Alfie's voice is pure heaven, Our daughter who did not think she would like the show now wants to go and see it after watching the 25th Anniversary DVD dozens of times. We would love to go again in September/ October but are not sure when Matt stops his run. If you have not been you must go as it's beyond words the feeling in the Queens Theatre.

FABULOUS! I remember her at Carlotta in Phantom WAYYY back in the 90s - saw it for my 21st birthday.

Just shows how versatile Jasna is to move from an operatic style, grandiose performance to the sassy, tough, belter that Mama is! Great performances!

To me its more about the producers wanting to make a name for themselves and networking and saw and grabbed on an opportunity, but fair play to them for having the foresight to do so.

I have seen Tee Jaye in Jersey Boys London many times and I think he is a very Talented Artist, I wish
I could see the Broadway production as I am a Jersey Boys Junkie and I know that production is different?
Tee Jaye is not only a great artist, he is a lovely man with time for his fans, London misses you Tee Jaye
but twitter makes the world much smaller so keep tweeting x alfiemum2
I am impressed with the Ballet, I would pay to see that x

Sad that arts suffer, but a large slice of the problem has also been caused by the Olympic Games. They have received a massive raft of the National Lottery money that would otherwise have gone to the arts...

We all suffer for our arts but the arts shouldn't suffer.. I have always thought rather than subsidy the arts should get the same tax exemption that religions have, as well as the artists getting tax relief.

RUG got it wrong, but good word of mouth would have made Phantom of the Opera a hit even if the marketing had been abysmal. It was very nearly an instant hit because it gave audiences many things that they loved. That did not happen with Love Never Dies.

Fortunately, Phantom of the Opera didn't have all of the flaws that had to be corrected over a period of months. They got it right from the beginning.
