Cantina at The London Wonderground

Cantina

“A sensational cocktail of glamorous vaudeville and scintillating circus.” I have always been intrigued by the circus and the incredible skills of acrobatics. However, I have never seen a show that showcases their talent. Along with a mixture of dance, magic and music, Cantina showed me a completely different type of theatre. Cantina is the headline show of Priceless London Wonderground’s, a venue to showcase a variety of cabaret, circus and strange curiosities throughout the summer. Set in a traditional 1920s Spiegeltent, it provides a lively atmosphere and sets the tone for the forthcoming show. Despite quite a restricted view … more »

Billy Elliot Review Victoria Palace Theatre

Billy Elliot

Having seen the film countless times and the musical several times before, I knew I was in for an entertaining show! The musical is set in Durham during the harsh political and financial climate of 1984/85 when Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, took on the Miner’s Union and the miners went on strike in protest. Times were tough for the working class and the strikes affected not only the whole community but the country. The story of the musical follows how Billy Elliot finds an escape in ballet during a difficult time, as his father and brother are miners on … more »

Long Day’s Journey into Night at the Apollo Theatre

Long Day's Journey Into Night

When I arrived at the Apollo Theatre I was told the play Long Day’s Journey Into Night would last three hours with a small interval. However, this should not put the audience off. The play contained an intriguing story which kept my attention. The play intensely explores the dysfunctional Tyrone family and the relationship between the four members. It holds many similarities to the writer Eugene O’Neill’s own turbulent life, such as the conflicted father-son relationship. The audience are invited to experience an intense day and night of the life of this family. Set in the summer home in … more »

Backbeat Review Duke of York’s Theatre

Backbeat

You might think Backbeat is going to be another jukebox musical full of all those greats songs from The Beatles. But this stage show is about the very beginning when The Beatles were a group of five. John Lennon (Andrew Knott), Paul McCartney (Daniel Healy), George Harrison (Will Payne), Pete Best (Oliver Bennett) and Stuart Sutcliffe (Nick Blood), left Liverpool in search for success which took them to Hamburg. Here they played 6 hours straight 7 days a week performing rock ‘n’ roll covers. The play focuses on the story of Stuart Sutcliffe and his struggle between the band, … more »

Cool Hand Luke Review Aldwych Theatre

Cool Hand Luke

I had never heard of the story of Cool Hand Luke but when I heard Marc Warren would be playing a bad boy I couldn’t resist. Emma Reeves adapted the play from the novel ‘Cool Hand Luke’ by Donn Pearce. The play focuses on the true story of Lloyd ‘Luke’ Jackson, a former solider turned convict. Known as a legend in prison for his daring escapes and famous for destroying parking meters. Nicknamed as Cool Hand due to him always playing cool in the face of brutality and always getting back up after a beating. Set in Florida in the … more »

Yes, Prime Minister at the Apollo Theatre

I’ve never watched the TV series of Yes, Prime Minister but reassured by my Dad it was going to be a very funny play. And indeed it was, with bang up to date jokes including one about the phone hacking scandal. Yes, Prime Minister was originally a British sitcom written by Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn in the 1980’s. Then in 2010 they collaborated to make a stage play which premiered at the Chichester Festival Theatre. Returning from its UK tour Yes, Prime Minister is reappearing in the West End at the Apollo Theatre. Now with a fresh new … more »

Pygmalion at the Garrick Theatre

Show Poster

Having grown up watching the musical My Fair Lady, I was so excited to see the play that influenced an all time favourite of mine. Pygmalion, written by George Bernard Shaw, explores the British class system in the 1920’s. A professor of phonetics, Henry Higgins places a bet with Colonel Pickering, a linguist of Indian dialects, that he could transform cockney flowergirl Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess by teaching her respectable speech and manners. The cast consists of Rupert Everett playing Henry Higgins, Kara Tointon playing Eliza Doolittle, Diana Rigg playing Mrs Higgins, Brendan Hooper playing Alfred … more »

Priscilla Queen of the Desert at the Palace Theatre

priscilla_poster_7171

55 wigs, 150 pairs of shoes, 514 costumes, 60 lipsticks and lot of glitter top with diva dance classics, what more could you want? Based on the 1994 Australian film, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; the show is about 3 drag queens, Tick, Bernadette and Adam, travelling across the Australian desert to Alice Springs. And in what better transport than an old tatty old bus named Priscilla, which of course has ‘Rear Entry on Request’ painted on its behind. This simple plot line is dressed with absurd and extravagant costumes from Cupcakes to Paintbrushes in every … more »

Million Dollar Quartet at the Noel Coward Theatre

The Famous Quartet

Million Dollar Quartet is based on true events, when four famous musical talents joined for the last time in Sun recording studios. They were brought together by the founder of Sun Records Sam Phillips (played by Bill Ward), who discovered these musicians launching them into the limelight. The four musicians were Elvis Presley (played by Michael Malarkey), Johnny Cash (played by Derek Hagen), Carl Perkins (played by Robert Britton Lyons) and Jerry Lee Lewis (played by Ben Goddard). Elvis brought his then girlfriend to the studio, played by Francesca Jackson who shows her fantastic set of vocals in Fever … more »

Dirty Dancing at the Aldwych Theatre

Dirty Dancing

If you love the film or even just the iconic song “I had the time of my life” then you’ll sure love this stage production of Dirty Dancing. A hardcore fan will be able to quote along, as majority of the script is the same as the film. Full of energy and nostalgia with a jukebox of tunes including “A Fool in Love” and “She’s like the Wind”. This feel-good musical will get your feet tapping away. In places, it does feel like a concert with dancers in the background and loses the magic of musicals, as a character … more »
