The Pitmen Painters
The cast of Lee Hall’s play THE PITMEN PAINTERS, currently
playing at the Duchess Theatre until 14th April, had the opportunity for a special private visit to the new Courtauld Gallery exhibition MONDRIAN || NICHOLSON IN PARALLEL this week.
The exhibition tells the story of the creative relationship between Piet Mondrian, one of the most celebrated painters of the 20th century, and Ben Nicholson, one of this country’s greatest modern artists. THE PITMEN PAINTERS has Ben Nicholson as a character; he actually appears in one scene, and in another scene the main characters critique one of his paintings (as illustrated in the production image attached).
Ben Nicholson is played in this production by Brian Lonsdale, and he and the other cast were thrilled to be able to see his real art up close.
